Much of the function of the Achilles in good running form is deceleration of the heal as it strikes the ground. Eccentric drops are a functional way to isolate this mechanism.  It stresses muscles force, causing microtrauma to muscle fibres.  It also increases the tendon strength in a longitudinal way to strengthen the tendon. Eccentric exercises help strengthen the tendon while it lengthens. These contractile units are overloading and weakened when you have an overuse injury thereby causing them to get stronger.

To do this exercise:

  1. Start with your forefoot on the edge of a step and heel raised above the step.
  2. Slowly lower your heel as far as you can.
  3. Push up with your opposite foot.  Do not push up with the same foot.
