When the neck and upper back muscles become weakened, the head and shoulders sag forward and place increased stress on the neck.  One of the most effective postural exercises for combating neck pain is the chin tuck exercise. This exercise helps to strengthen the muscles that pull the head back over the shoulders and also stretches some of the smaller muscles of the neck, that are generally tight.  Doing this exercise can also teach your body neuromuscular control, which contributes to good posture.

To do this exercise:

  1. Stand nice a tall and keep you back, shoulders and head aligned.
  2. Imagine pushing you nose straight back.

You can push your head back so you are doing this as an isometric exercise (so your head doesn’t move).
